Happy St. Nicholas Day!

On the Eve of December 6th, many children in Europe were chanting;

St. Nicholas, mon bon patron,
Apportez-moi beaucoup de bon-bons
Plein mes bas et mes souliers:
Je serai sage toute l’annee.

St. Nicholas, my owner, bring me lots of candy, Fill the bottoms of my soles:I will behave all year

French children placed their shoes near the chimney last night, in hopes that St. Nicholas brought them gifts.

St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra, (now known as Demre, Turkey), lived in the third century. Born to wealthy parents, he used his inheritance to help the needy. Throughout the centuries many stories have been told of his life and deeds. These legends will be passed to younger generations, as families across the world gather on December 6th.

The most famous story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value( a dowry). Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold as prostitutes. Mysteriously, three bags of gold appeared in their home, providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in the shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.

Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. And so St. Nicholas is a gift-giver and becomes the Patron Saint of children.

December 6 brings many celebrations in honor of St. Nicholas.

One of the largest celebrations is held in the village of St. Nicholas de Port, in Lorraine. There is a parade, music, religious ceremonies, fireworks, and of course, the magical arrival of St. Nicholas.

In honor of St. Nicholas and in the spirit of the season, I think we should also celebrate December 6th and give to a child in need. Gather around your fireplace today and tell your children and grand-children the real story behind Santa Claus.

Resources on iTunes

I have been using my iPod in my languages classes for a while now... mostly for songs and to show You Tube videos.

In the most recent months, I discovered PODCASTS. Once you open iTunes, click on the Podcast link at the top and you can search your specific language. Here, you can download audio lessons for FREE!

Today... I was just forwarded the following link to iTunesU. WOW! A whole world was unfolded to me! Here you can search any topic and listen to lectures, programs, audio lessons, etc.! I found a few GREAT language lessons through OPEN university which offers free audio lessons that include transcripts that you can download.

What a wonderful tool for the foreign language educator AND parents to use to strengthen their own knowledge of a language and share with your children!

Trip to Quebec, Summer 2011!

WL4K is hosting it's first international trip for students this summer to Montreal and Quebec! This trip is open to any student age 3 and up (traveling with parent chaperone(s)). Travelers are encouraged to have studied French, but the main goal of this trip will be to offer a cultural exposure to the children in a foreign country where English is not the primary language.

I am hosting an information night on Sunday, Oct. 17th from 5-6pm at Rue de Jean (39 John Street). Come have a glass of wine and some hors d'oeuvres while learning more information about this wonderful opportunity for your children!

Authentic French food in Charleston

Add Video
Here are some of the best places to go in Charleston to get a taste of the best food in the world!

Rue de Jean: Located in historic downtown Charleston , SC , 39 Rue de Jean is a refined French café and bar offering the best in classic Brasserie cuisine. The creations of our culinary team pay homage to the classic brasserie cuisine that inspired vehemently loyal Parisians. Guests of 39 Rue de Jean enjoy indoor/outdoor patio seating, cocktails and a predominantly French wine list blended with a selection of our steward's favorites.

Gaulart et Maliclet Cafe: 98 Broad Street (843) 577.9797. Some of the best escargot in Charleston. Try their lunch or dinner plates that come with a glass of wine all for under $10.00!

Macaroon Boutique:
Authentic, traditional bakery/patisserie. Baked every day on site with 99% local ingredients. Macaroons, breakfast pastries, chocolate truffles, cookies, country breads, crusty rolls, all in the French style, all fresh and delicious.

Christophe Artisan Chocolatier: 363 1/2 King Street and in I'on village. The place to go for handmade chocolates to one-of a kind chocolate sculptures.

On-line resources from the BBC:

Talk Spanish and Talk French are great video resources for kids (and parents) to learn and practice your new language at home!

For kids only from the BBC:
Probably my favorite web resource for learning french! Primary French from the BBC introduces French language through animated videos and corresponding games.

Primary Spanish is also available but not as extensive as the French site.

Pronounciation Help

Many parents want to encourage language learning at home... but don't know how to say the words!

LangaugeGuide.org is the solution! Simply drag your mouse over the vocabulary word to hear it pronounced (topics range from alphabet, colors and numbers to learning the words for the planets, food and travel)

visit: www.languageguide.org and choose your language!

This week in WL4K classes...

Hola / Bonjour!

This week: my name is... what's your name? Children are practicing asking and telling what their names are! Elementary students have all gotten to choose a French / Spanish name for class and made name tags! We are playing all sorts of name games and taking turns rolling or throwing the beach ball to encourage the children to speak in the target language!

Every week, we will be spending about 10-15 minutes reviewing vocabulary or phrases that have been previously taught. This repetition is necessary for language learning and also allows new students to join at any time to catch on.

Bon weekend!

1st week of classes off to a great start!

Hola / Bonjour!

This week in our language classes, we have had fun learning to say hello and goodbye to one another in the target language, learn how to ask "How are you" and to say whether we are good, bad or just okay! We have already been learning a lot of songs and playing games!

You can incorporate even the smallest amount of language into your daily routine... saying, "Bonjour!" when you pick your daughter up from school, "Gracias!" to you son when he helps around the house, "Adios!" when dad leaves for work, etc. Just by doing this, you are encouraging your little ones to become life-long language learners!

Please be sure that I have your email address since I will be sending out a monthly newsletter with resources and vocabulary lists for you to practice at home. You can email me at:
worldlanguages4kids@gmail.com to be sure to be added to the mailing list.

Gracias! Merci!

Here is a link to his website where you can listen to samples, print off the lyrics and purchase his CDs.
