Fall Break Fun!

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, our minds race from grocery shopping lists to travel plans, all while the kids are focused on the most important thing- no school!!  Try these fun activities to keep the kids busy at home!

First up is homemade play dough!

What you'll need:
2 cups water
2 1/2 cups white flour
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
2 packages unsweetened fruit drink mix (Kool Aid works well)
3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1) Bring the water to a boil and set aside.

2) Whisk together the dry ingredients in a separate bowl.   Stir the vegetable oil into the flour mixture with a spoon (not a whisk).  Pour the hot water into the bowl and continue stirring.

3) After allowing the mixture to dry, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.  Knead the play dough until it is elastic and smooth (about 8 minutes). Store any unused portions in the refrigerator.

Next up: Turkey cupcakes! Kids will enjoy making a sweeter version of the main dish.

What you'll need:
Cupcakes
Canned icing
Tube of decorative icing
Candy corn
Nutter Butter cookies

1) Start with any flavor of cupcakes, iced with orange or brown icing.
2) Insert 5 or 6 candy corn around the edge of half of the cupcake to make turkey feathers.
3) Make eyes and a beak on half of a Nutter Butter cookie with decorative icing and insert into the middle of the cupcake.
4) Enjoy the finished product!

Lastly, we have a Tree of Thanksgiving! This can be used as a centerpiece for your dinner or just a fun activity to prompt thoughts of thankfulness.

What you'll need:

A vase or another container filled with small rocks or gravel (any material to weigh it down)
Small sticks
Colored silk or paper leaves
Glue gun or paper clips
Black marker

1) Arrange the sticks in the vase to look like a tree
2) Have each family member write something they are thankful for on the leaves each day during the week leading up to Thanksgiving
3) Attach the leaves to the tree with the hot glue gun, or hang leaves like ornaments using straightened paper clips.
